An embroidery of images and inscriptions

Despite its name, the Bayeux Tapestry, about 224 ft (68.3 m) long and 27.5 inches (70 cm) wide, is, in fact, a narrative embroidery. Embroidered with images and inscriptions, it consists of nine linen panels connected to each other. The consistency of the line of the woolen thread reveals the use of a guide, perhaps a drawing, on the canvas. Unlike embroidery, a tapestry sees its decoration resulting from the weaving of threads at right angles, the image and the fabric taking shape simultaneously.
