An emblematic inner courtyard

The vast rectangular inner courtyard of the Hospices de Beaune - also called Cour d'Honneur - is the most emblematic image of the building because of the perspective it offers on the roofs covered with polychrome glazed terracotta tiles and their geometric figures. It is bordered by two half-timbered wings occupied by bedrooms and surmounted by multiple skylights with richly ornate lead carvings and decorations. The warm polychromy of wood and terracotta contrasts with the opposite wing of the building overlooking the street. Sober and austere, it is built of freestone and covered with a slate roof surmounted by a spire.
