An emblematic and sacred mountain

The highest eastern peak of the Pyrenees chain, the Pic du Canigou rises in Conflent in the Pyrénées-Orientales department. It constitutes the highest point of the eponymous massif and was long considered the highest peak in the whole Pyrenees chain. The Pic du Canigou is particularly renowned among Catalans who consider it a sacred mountain. Its first ascent is believed to have been performed by Pierre III, King of Aragon, in 1280. Among the many monuments found on the massif are the Saint-Martin-du-Canigou abbey and the priory of Serrabona.
