In the centre of the Normandy American Cemetery Memorial’s open arch stands, upon a Ploumanach granite base, a 7-metre-high bronze statue which symbolises ‘The Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves’. This statue is the work of the New York sculptor Donald De Lue (1897-1988), whose creations are exhibited in many museums across the United States. In 1960, he was received the ‘Henry Hering Art and Architecture Award’ from the National Sculpture Society for his outstanding collaboration with the architects of the Colleville-sur-Mer Cemetery and Memorial.
