In 1837, lightning struck the North Tower of the Saint-Denis basilica. Rebuilt by the architect François Debret, the spire was dismantled in 1847 by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, who first wanted to rebuild the facade. This project did not succeed. Since then, the North Tower has been left as is. In January 2017, the Ministry of Culture gave the green light for the reconstruction of the spire and its bell tower. Planned to last until 2028, the work, financed by the State, the Ile-de-France region and the department of Seine-Saint-Denis, should begin in autumn 2022.
