Draught horses are very popular these days, especially with winegrowers like Benoît Marguet. Reasoned agricultural practices are spreading, mechanisation is showing its limits, and, above all, the horse has proved to be a marvel: “It does a very high-quality job, which is ideal for looking after the vines in steep areas”, says the winemaker. Folklore? Not at all: “It’s very modern work, it’s top of the range, the haute couture of the vine!” The rows are only 1.5 m apart, but the agile horse pulls the plough, all straight: the soil thus pulled back to the foot of the vines suffocates the grass that competes with the vines.
