An arid and almost desert area in the Caribbean

The Savane des Pétrifications (Savannah of Petrifications) astonishes by the contrast it offers with the idea one usually has of tropical environments. It indeed forms an arid and almost desert area in the municipality of Sainte-Anne, at the southern tip of Martinique. The presence of numerous pipe organ cacti (Pilosocereus royenii) even gives it the look of a plain from the Far West. The bare soil of this flat, lunar-looking desert is strewn with blocks of polychrome jasper - a sedimentary rock containing 80 to 95 % silica - of yellow, red, or black color.
