The Briançonnais is a geographical area close to the Italian border and Savoy. It extends over 256,150 acres (103,660 ha) and includes all the valleys located in a star around the town of Briançon, to which are added the Écrins and the Haute Romanche. Beyond its remarkable mountain sites, this territory of 27,000 inhabitants has an important cultural heritage made up of churches, chapels, oratories, but also numerous military structures. Its geographical perimeter more or less corresponds to the hydrographic basin of the Haute Durance upstream the Roche de Rame and delimited to the north by the border with Maurienne and to the south by Mont-Dauphin.
