An archaeological passion developed in the 16th century

From the 16th century, scholars became passionate about the ancient sites of Vaison-la-Romaine and inventoried, classified, and possibly collected objects from ancient monuments. A real conservation policy was implemented in situ following the excavations carried out by Canon Joseph Sautel at the beginning of the 20th century. It led to the constitution of an archaeological museum that brings together the original statues, mosaics, elements of columns, and friezes found during the excavations of the Gallo-Roman sites.
