An arboreal and sedentary tarantula
0
0
Arboreal, the Avicularia versicolor tarantula locally called Matoutou falaise lives rather in the north of Martinique, in particular in the wet tropical forest of Le Prêcheur in Grand-Rivière. It moves quickly in the trees and approaches the ground to hunt. In the adult stage, it nests in the trunks of trees, while the juveniles mostly settle in the rolled up leaves. Sedentary, it is generally not very aggressive, though its bite is venomous without being fatal. Rather voracious, the spider feeds on Anolis (small lizards), frogs, crickets, cockroaches, grasshoppers, and small rodents. Its main predators are birds and the wasp of the genus Pepsis. During the mating period, the female goes hunting the Matoutou falaise that she paralyzes by stinging it with her poisonous sting. She then drags it to her burrow, lays her single egg on it, and seals the burrow. The larva develops by gradually devouring the tarantula while respecting its vital parts to have fresh flesh until it is transformed into an insect.
