The greater flamingo (Phœnicopterus roseus) is the only animal species to be satisfied with the highly alkaline mud of coastal and lake areas as its only food resource. Its food specialization avoids competition with other species on the one hand but prevents the use of substitute food on the other. The mortality of the species is, therefore, particularly important when the lagoons freeze in winter or dry up in summer.
