The gramophone exhibited at the Villa du Temps Retrouvé in Cabourg as an invention of the Belle Epoque revolutionized the field of sound recording, reproduction, and distribution and enabled the development of the music industry. Invented by the German Émile Berliner in 1887, it represents a technological evolution of the phonograph patented ten years earlier by Thomas Edison. It is distinguished by two major innovations: the replacement of the recording medium (disk instead of cylinder) and the lateral (instead of vertical) engraving process. If the term gramophone at the origin of a registered trademark probably corresponds to an approximate inversion of the word phonograph, it has often been replaced by the vocable phonograph, which extended to all the musical instruments with cylinders of the era. Gramophones and phonographs gradually disappeared in the middle of the 20th century in favor of the record player.
