The Estéron takes its source in the territory of Soleilhas and crosses twenty municipalities in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Alpes-Maritimes departments in southeastern France. The river, which presents seasonal fluctuations typical of the Mediterranean pluvial regime with two periods of flooding linked to the equinoxes, has a generally abundant flow. The Estéron has preserved a relative ecological integrity by remaining the only river in the Alpes-Maritimes without any hydroelectric dam.
