Built in the 17th century, the Saint-Louis des Invalides church is dedicated to King Louis IX - canonised as Saint Louis. The building, designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, bears witness to the importance King Louis XIV attached to faith. The painting at the top of the Dôme, by Charles de La Fosse, reaffirms the struggle of Catholicism against the Reformed religion. From the beginning of his reign, Louis XIV, eager for absolutism, tried to stifle the practice of Protestant worship. Tolerated and then repressed, the Protestants were hunted down and forced into exile after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes on 18 October 1685.
