An aborted historical destiny

Located in the municipality of Rayol-Canadel-sur-Mer in the Var department, Rayol beach was expected to play a historical role. The site was programmed to welcome the landing of the first wave of African Commandos from Operation Anvil Dragoon during the Provence landing of August 15, 1944. A navigation error, however, led the commandos a few kilometers further to the west, on Canadel beach, where two commemorative stelae were erected.
