An abbey destroyed many times

0
St. Sindulphe is the church of Hautvillers abbey, a few kilometres from Epernay. Over the centuries, the Benedictine monastery was destroyed many times: by the Normans in 882, by the English in 1449, by the Huguenots in 1564... Thanks to donations from Catherine de Médicis, the abbey experienced a new boom at the end of the 17th century, before being dismantled and sold in 1793. The tombstone of the monk who made the lasting glory and fame of the Champagne region, Dom Pierre Pérignon (1639-1715), can be found at St. Sindulphe.
