The Salins d'Hyères, in the Var department, are among the 2,431 Ramsar world sites. They were named after the Iranian city in which the convention on wetlands of international importance, particularly as habitats for aquatic birds, was defined. France alone comprises 51 Ramsar sites, including the Salins d'Hyères that received the wetland of international importance label in September 2008. The site is also part of the Natura 2000 network for its habitats and avifauna.
