Mining in the Val d'Argent began modestly in the Middle Ages, around the 10th century, before taking off during the 16th century. Thanks to new digging techniques from Saxony, the Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines valley experienced significant economic prosperity. Around a hundred lead, copper, and silver mines flourished, including the Saint-Jean Engelsbourg's, and 19 foundries worked day and night. The arrival of precious metals from Central and South America contributed to the decline of the Vosges' silver mines. Today, the galleries of Saint-Jean's former vein are accessible through a via ferrata in Tellure mining park.
