Amazing gymnatics of the tortoise
1
0
When retracting its head under its carapace to protect or camouflage, the tortoise does amazing gymnastics with its spine. This shield is actually made of a layer of keratin patches called scutes with blood and nerves supply and a layer of about fifty bones which are fused to the carapace, including ribs and vertebrae. So it cannot take off its armor.
