The periphery of Maré Island is formed by the reef of the former atoll constituted of fossil corals. Its altitude declines from south to north illustrating its different phases of uplift and tilt. It reaches 452ft (138m) in the south, 410ft (125m) in the west, 354ft (108m) in the northwest, 305ft (93m) in La Roche, 275ft (84m) in the east and only 203ft (62m) in the northeast.
