On November 2nd, 1945, General de Gaulle promulgated an ordinance. It specified the appellations of origin of Alsace wines and set rules. The hillsides are privileged to the detriment of the plains. Those of Riquewihr already had the reputation of being the finest grape varieties. France wanted the abandonment of cheap wines, advocated by the German Empire during the two world wars. The evolution of the Alsatian vineyard towards quality wines materialized with the recognition of the AOC Alsace in 1962.
