It is not unusual to witness vast clouds of mist over the Alsatian plains. Due to the degraded oceanic climate of the region, this phenomenon often occurs during winter and spring, when the temperature is highly changeable. It is sometimes accentuated by thermal inversions that produce colder temperatures on the plain than on the heights. The hot summer climate of Alsace sometimes extends until the end of October, allowing late grape harvests.
