The Graoully (from the German gräulich, monstrous, macabre) is a mythical dragon-like animal whose legend is widespread in Lorraine. In the 3rd century, Saint Clément was challenged by a Roman legionary to rid the city of Metz of this terrible animal. He captured the dragon with his stole and dragged it to the Seille, a tributary of the Moselle. An effigy of the Graoully is visible at the Haut-Kœnigsbourg castle. The dragon hangs from the ceiling in the Lorraine room, gazing at intruders with his gleaming green eye.
