Alsace and the German Empire

The reconstruction of Haut-Kœnigsbourg Castle became the symbol of medieval Alsace, when the region was part of the Holy Roman Empire. When Emperor Wilhelm II visited the site in 1902, he promised the repeal of the Diktaturparagraph, which restricted the freedoms of Alsace. In 1911, Alsace-Moselle indeed benefited from an almost similar status to the other länders' (states) of the Empire. Ironically, Elsass-Lothringen (Alsace) became a fully-fledged federated state of the German Empire almost at the same time it returned to France in 1918.
