The Alpes-de-Haute-Provence is a very mountainous department and one of the least densely populated in France with 23.7 inhabitants/km2. The population is concentrated in the less isolated areas of the valleys and plateaus, mainly in small villages since half of the municipalities have less than 200 inhabitants. Only 23 communes out of the 198 of the department are considered urban by the INSEE and only two agglomerations exceed 7,500 inhabitants.
