Los almendros se adelantan a la primavera echando la flor cuando aún reinan los fríos invernales. Aunque, poco a poco, los tiernos capullos inmaduros van tomando breves baños de sol entre escarcha, frío, viento y nevada, madurando con rapidez en los escasos días de sol invernal, hasta que, repentinamente, abren sus bellos pétalos albos y rosados. El almendro se adorna de bellas flores antes de vestirse del verde claro de sus hojas.
Es muy característica su temprana floración: Los almendros sacan la flor muy temprano, y aún antes de echar las hojas, rasgo que sirve para identificarlos fácilmente. Según las flores van desarrollándose y perdiendo pétalos, comienzan a crecer los brotes de las hojas, que se abren a continuación. Hay un breve periodo de tiempo en el que el almendro está cubierto de flores, pero sin hojas. Debido a la prontitud de su floración, ésta es un indicador del fin del invierno, ya que anticipa la llegada de la primavera.
