La ville de Chantilly est située au cœur de la forêt de Chantilly, sur un plateau sédimentaire du Lutétien supérieur. Ce plateau calcaire est recouvert par des sables créés par les ruissellements sur une épaisseur d’au moins 1 mètre. C’est ce sable qui est utile à l’entraînement des chevaux de course en forêt.
