Breastfeeding and preparation for weaning
0
0
The duration of breastfeeding in wild Przewalski horses (Equus ferus przewalskii) varies between 35 and 40 weeks. The mare begins weaning a few weeks before the birth of a new foal to invest her energy in the future newborn. Weaning is progressive with the resurgence of agonistic behaviors during feedings by the mare towards the foal, aged 13 to 16 weeks, in order to encourage its grazing.
