All facing West

In a perfect alignment, they are all facing West towards the United States. All 9,387 Italian-white marble crosses, each, marking the grave of a sacrificed youth on the morning of June 1944. Amongst these, 307 present only one sentence as their epitaph: ‘Known unto God’. The American cemetery of Colleville-sur-Mer exudes a sentiment of great serenity, in contrast with the noise of the waves, which have long since erased these tremendous heroes’ marks on the sand. They were mostly Americans, but among them can be found a few Scottish, English, and Canadian men. They were all between 20 and 23 years old.
