The masked moray inhabits the crevices and small caves of Polynesian reefs from 16.4 to 164ft (5 to 50m) deep. It spends most of its time concealed and forages at night out of its hole to hunt for fish, alone or in cooperation with other species such as groupers. It is also a predator for shrimps, cuttlefish and octopus.
