Nouméa's Place des Cocotiers is planted with many coconut palms but also several remarkable Albizia saman. This tree of the Fabaceae family, nicknamed black wood or rain tree, can measure up to 82ft (25m) high and forms a parasol with a diameter of up to 131ft (40m). Its leaflets have the particularity of folding at night and in rainy or overcast weather allowing the rain to reach the ground. In New Caledonia, the Albizia saman are used to shelter the coffee plantations and to provide shade for the livestock.
