A coastal watch fort

Al Zubarah Fort is located inland on the north-western coast of the Qatari peninsula, in the municipality of Ash Shamal, about 65 miles (105 km) from Doha. Built as a military and police post in 1938 by Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani, the fortress is now included in the archaeologically protected area of the walled city of Al Zubarah – a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013. Largely post-dating the 1811 destruction of the Gulf’s largest trading city at its peak in the late 18th century, the fort has no connection (apart from its name) with the city’s abandoned ruins under the desert sands.
