Al Thakhira Nature Reserve
1
1
The Al Thakhira area became a nature reserve in 2006. Located 10.6 miles (17 km) northeast of the city of Al Khor and 40 miles (64 km) from the capital Doha, the reserve is one of the only places in Qatar where vegetation grows naturally, without human intervention. Grey mangroves (Avicennia marina) shape the coastline and are home to a rich biodiversity both marine and terrestrial. The marine section of the reserve includes the small island of Um Far and natural mangroves, while the terrestrial part of the reserve is made up of gravel pits, sabkhas (high salinity flood depressions) and inlets.
