Akamaru community

The rare occupants of Akamaru live from the practice of a few food crops including that of hand pollinated vanilla, fishing, pearl farming and tourism. They occupy the only hamlet of the island built around the two white bell towers of Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix church which protrude from the vegetation of coconut palms, hibiscus, bougainvillea, bushes of tiare flowers and lemon trees. Completely restored in the early 2000s, this imposing church bears witness to the construction frenzy of the 19th century missionaries and the considerable efforts made by the island community.
