From the 1960s, the rural exodus and tourist influx imposed a strong real estate pressure on Ajaccio whose quality of life is undermined by concreting. Today the city which has strongly developed to the north and east on the coastal strip and the heights, seems built on 2 levels with traditional buildings around the port and large complexes of towers and concrete elsewhere. 85% of the dwellings were built after 1949.
