When the sun sets over Ajaccio, the backlit city melts completely into the relief which hosts it. Implanted in a sheltered position on the west coast of the island, it extends on the north shore of the Gulf of Ajaccio, between Gravona and the 'Pointe de la Parata'. The western part of its territory is particularly hilly and peaks at 2,591ft (790m). Mont Salario (1,732ft/528m) dominates the city.
