The summit of La Meije is visible from the Romanche valley it overlooks at the level of the village of La Grave. La Meije (13,064 ft / 3,982 m) has a lower altitude than the Barre des Écrins (13,458 ft / 4,102 m) but is better known thanks to its asymmetrical profile, enhanced by ice, also visible from the Galibier and Lautaret passes. In the 19th century, its conquest sparked a veritable frenzy. The only summit that can both be admired and easily approached thanks to its cable car while remaining difficult to climb, La Meije - accompanied by a gentian flower - was chosen in 1903 as the emblem of the badge of the French Alpine Club.
