Aiming for Cherbourg's liberation

Located on a coastal strip backed by marshy areas, Utah Beach is accessible by the D913. The D421, which runs along it, allows visitors to discover the old German blockhouses hidden in the dunes. The American landing that took place on this beach in the early morning of June 6, 1944, was preceded by a night airborne operation on Sainte-Mère-Église. The objective of this military operation was to liberate Cherbourg by breaking through the German defensive lines and to reach the RN13, the main Cotentin road, during the day.
