El aguilucho lagunero occidental Circus aeruginosus es el mayor de todos los aguiluchos y el más fácil de identificar pues la carencia del típico obispillo blanco, su estructura robusta a la vez que estilizada y una mayor envergadura lo delatan.
El aguilucho lagunero es una típica ave de presa de marismas, aunque en migración frecuenta las costas y el campo abierto, pero no suele ser observado lejos de marjales y lagunas. Vuela bajo, como los demás aguiluchos, pero también lo hace a mayor altura, generalmente entre tres y cinco metros sobre el suelo y las plantas palustres.
Se alimenta de ranas fundamentalmente, pero también de pequeños mamíferos hasta el tamaño de un gazapo, culebras, lagartos e incluso insectos. Es un enorme depredador de huevos y pollos de aves acuáticas, que cuando están heridas o enfermas no pueden defenderse y son capturadas y muertas por el aguilucho.
