The Dani tribes of the Baliem Valley cultivate their lands by practicing slash and burn agriculture. After setting fire to the land, they plant taro, sweet potatoes, yams or corn on small raised plots surrounded by ditches. These neat terraced crops located in the mountains of central Papua at an altitude of 5,249ft (1,600m) are one of the attractions of the region.
