Agats is a coastal village which has become the administrative center of the Asmat country following the institutionalization of its regency in 2002. The kampung of Bis Agats, to which the village belongs, had 8,998 inhabitants in 2016. In a few years, the place has developed significantly following the establishment of many Indonesians from Java and Sumatra. All kinds of new shops and services (banks ; a basic hospital ; furniture, clothing and hardware stores of all kinds) have opened in addition to the market where the local and inland inhabitants sell the fruit of their harvests or fishery.
