The Reims Mountain Regional Nature Park extends west of the Marne department. In October 2009, a file was submitted to inscribe the landscapes of Champagne on the UNESCO World Heritage list as cultural landscapes. The area was eventually listed as a World Heritage Site in 2015 under the name hillsides, houses, and cellars of Champagne. The use of the term mountain is locally justified by the altitude change between the Champagne Plain (262 ft / 80 m) and the cuesta where the vines producing champagne grow, 656 ft higher (200 m).
