Adjusting a glass stem

There are several stages in the manufacture of a stemmed glass. Once the molten crystal mass has been taken from the furnace, the cup (the body) of the glass is mouth-blown. The foot, shaped by another glassmaker, is then added. The base of the glass is crucial to the final result. With no tools other than pliers and scissors, the glassmaker adjusts the foot at a glance. To finish the glass, the cap that blocks the top of the glass must be cut off. Then the edges are heated to round off their sharpness. It is in particular to develop the tableware products that René Lalique established a glass factory in Wingen-sur-Moder in 1921.
