The fortified ensemble of Briançon ranges from 3,937 to 5,577ft (1,200m-1,700m) demonstrating its ability to adapt to a mountainous geographical context to which man had to bow. The relief locally imposed constructions dug in the rock or leaning against the natural escarpments with galleries, passages and underground stairs connecting the different platforms.
