To cope with the limited availability of fresh water in the salt saturated soils of the mangroves, the leaves of the mangrove trees limit their evaporation by controlling the opening of their stomata, their surface pores responsible for the gas and water exchanges. They can also control their orientation so as to avoid too much exposure to the sun when it is at its zenith.
