In the weeks leading up to hibernation, the Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni hermanni) accumulates enough fat reserves to go several months without eating or drinking. Just before hibernating, it reduces its food intake so as not to fall asleep with a full digestive tract which could ferment and cause bacteria to grow during this long period of inactivity.
