The coral buildings are erected thanks to the accumulation of coral limestone production, combined with that of some so-called 'encrusting' calcareous algae. This accumulation of limestone can even reach nearly 3280ft (1000m) thick on the atolls which are the oldest and most eroded islands of the archipelagoes of French Polynesia.
