In the center of the walls of the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle are the apartments and the keep. The entrance is through the lower courtyard that includes an inn, a fountain, and a forge. From there, a drawbridge, preceded by steps, overlooks the inner courtyard. The central spiral staircase was added in the 20th century during restoration work. It serves the three floors and the twenty-two rooms of the castle, arranged in a row. The openwork turret of the staircase, octagonal in shape, is richly decorated.
