Absolutely symmetrical architecture

The classical style of the Hôtel des Invalides is more in keeping with Louis XIV’s idea of grandeur than the Italian Baroque. The columns, capitals and pediments of the facades were borrowed from the ancient style. The Hôtel is built in stone around a median axis, perpendicular to the Seine, with symmetrical buildings on each side. The Royal Court (now the Court of Honour) is to the north and the Dome Church to the south. In the 17th century, each side of the main courtyard contained two rooms which served as refectories. The dormitories were housed in the buildings of the square courtyards. Between 1676 and 1690, nearly 6,000 invalids were admitted.
