About the importance of ropes

The Guédelon construction site is full of ropes used, in particular, in lifting systems with pulleys or for transporting stones. All the ropes are produced by a ropemaker in the rope factory of the castle from fibers extracted from hemp, a textile plant. The ropes stand out by their diameter counted in number of strands and their tension. The ropemaker first prepares the hemp, which he cleans and whose fibers he separates with combs before spinning it. All his art then consists in reeling the hemp as evenly as possible. The craftsman finally gathers the threads and twists them together on a spinning wheel or cart to make the ropes.
